I don’t follow the classic system homebrew scene as much as I should but every time a game pops up on my radar from it I’m quite wowed by how far developers can push older hardware. In comes Pier Solar, a role playing game originally released for the Sega Genesis/Megadrive that takes advantage of the power behind the system and even adds special support for the Sega CD add-on for enhanced audio; originally released in 2010 and is now looking toward porting to modern systems and the Sega Dreamcast through a beautiful looking HD Port.
Watermelon, the developers behind Pier Solar aim to match the nostalgic feel of the original game with lovely hand painted backgrounds & portraits with higher quality sprites meshing to create a balanced mix for a well thought out re-envisioning. In addition to this Watermelon aims to put a loving effort into every ounce of the process in conjunction with a Kickstarter to help fund the project licensing, production, and testing. This includes full boxed packaging, manuals, illustrated guidebook, 4 disc soundtrack, special collectors edition, original art and more trappings you might find along the lines of a high caliber release for backers. In addition to this Watermelon has added that the original version will be also be unlockable within the game via easter egg. Everything about the project is heartwarming with the amount of love put into it.
Take a look at the screenshots below and just see a taste of what they’ve created thus far.
