Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Wow. Never has having so little control over the progression of events been so awesome. Most of the exploring in Uncharted was laid out with only one way to go about things, but I was too busy having a blast to care very much. The adventures that Nathan Drake goes on are like what Indiana Jones would look like in modern times (Lucas’ recent effort, obviously the result of his rampant dementia, is obviously excluded). With some of, if not the, best voice acting I’ve come across in a game, as well as a generous use of the word ‘crap,’ at no point this year was I more entertained while playing a game. Like many of my top games this year I really need to go back and see how the series began.

New Super Mario Bros Wii
Dave’s number two is my number one… ew. Poop jokes aside, Nintendo hit New Super Mario Bros. Wii out of the park. The level design is tightly constructed and the controls represent the epitome of perfection, but the multiplayer is what sets it apart from the rest of 2009′s library. Whether you’re frantically racing toward a pile of powerups as they spew from a question box, searching for a hidden exit or trying to figure out the best way to get a gold coin, New Super Mario Bros. Wii was this year’s most engaging and creative title.

Batman Arkham Asylum
Not only is Batman Arkham Asylum worthy of being called the best game of the year, but I would personally describe it as the best superhero game I’ve ever played. Rocksteady finally delivers the Batman game you’ve been waiting for and they’ve created one of the best stealth/action titles to come along in years. The story, voicework and graphics are all some of the best you’ll find in a video game, and that coupled with some amazing gameplay make this the complete package. If you didn’t get a chance to play this game in 2009, it needs to be the first game on your list for 2010.
