The July NPD is here, and boy was it a doozy of a month. Hardware sales are down. Check out the comparison to last month and you’ll see a huge drop across the board. The Wii is finally starting to look like a mortal console in terms of sales, dipping dangerously close to its rivals… could a price cut be in order?

Wii – 252,500
Xbox 360 – 202,900
PlayStation 3 – 121,800
PlayStation Portable – 122,800
PlayStation 2 – 108,000
June 2009
Nintendo DS – 766,500
Wii – 361,700

PlayStation Portable – 163,500
PlayStation 2 – 152,700
Then we have the software side. Now we know why publishers ignore the summer months. Pretty embarassing numbers, especially when one considers that four of them were released over a year ago. Seriously, was nothing else this month appealing? Three of them were DS games, is it possible that summer road trips inspired these sales? At least Wii Play has remained absent.
