It’s a sad day when a company shuts their doors, but it’s something else altogether when that news is overshadowed by the up-in-the-air status of an unfinished game. 3D Realms has shut down, and the status of the infamous Duke Nukem Forever is now unknown.
It’s been 17 years yesterday since 3D Realms released Wolfenstein 3D. The studio was also behind PC classics like Commander Keen and, of course, Duke Nukem 3D.
Duke Nukem Forever, the industry’s longest running joke, is now facing a real turning point. The game has been in development hell since its announcement back in April of 1997, but Take-Two owns the publishing rights. They could move the project to a new team, start from scratch or scratch the whole project completely.
